Divisions of Pakistan
2004-03-20: News articles about the fighting in Pakistan show the
following subdivisions of F.A.T.A.: Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzul,
Kurram,
North Waziristan, and South Waziristan. There should be one more,
situated between Zhob and Dera Ismail Khan. The status of these
divisions is
not mentioned, but I would assume they were districts until otherwise
informed.
I have received spreadsheets from Karem Abdalla and Mario Pezza showing
more current divisions of Pakistan, with 1998 census figures. I used
them as a basis for updating the list of divisions. Here is a
Map
of the current divisions.
On the primary level, Pakistan is divided into four provinces, two
centrally administered areas, a territory, and a capital territory. On
the
secondary level, the provinces are subdivided into divisions; the other
types have no subdivisions at the secondary level, so I treat them as
being a single subdivision each. The subdivisions on the tertiary level
are districts, along with some agencies in Federally Administered
Tribal Areas. On the quaternary level, districts are subdivided into
tehsils. This table shows the secondary-level subdivisions of Pakistan.

Change history:
- 1969-07-28: Malakand division formed by uniting Chitral, Dir, and
Swat hill states (part of Peshawar division?). As a result of this
change, the divisions of West Pakistan province (equivalent to
modern-day Pakistan) were: Bahawalpur, Dera Ismail Khan, Hyderabad,
Kalat,
Karachi, Khairpur, Lahore, Malakand, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta,
Rawalpindi, and Sargodha. Capitals of divisions had the same name as
the
divisions themselves, except that the capital of Malakand was Saidu, and
Rawalpindi was apparently administered from Islamabad.
- 1970-07-01: By the West Pakistan Dissolution Order of 1970, West
Pakistan province was split into four provinces and Islamabad capital
territory. Baluchistan province contained Kalat, Quetta, and the
largest section of Karachi divisions. Northwest Frontier province
contained Dera Ismail Khan, Malakand, and Peshawar divisions. Punjab
province contained Bahawalpur, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, and
Sargodha divisions, as well as most of Pakistan's share of Jammu and
Kashmir. Sind province consisted of Hyderabad and Khairpur divisions,
plus a small part of Karachi division including the city of Karachi
itself.
- ~1975: Federally Administered Tribal Areas formed by taking the
western parts of Dera Ismail Khan and Peshawar districts from North
West Frontier province. Hazara and Kohat divisions split from Peshawar;
Gujranwala division formed from parts of Lahore and Rawalpindi;
Dera Ghazi Khan division split from Multan; Faisalabad division split
from Sarghodha; Sibi division formed from parts of Kalat and Quetta;
Las Bela district transferred from Karachi division to Kalat division,
where it already formed part of Baluchistan province; Makran
division split from Kalat. Name of Khairpur division changed to Sukkur.
(This entry represents a comparison between maps of the divisions
of Pakistan dated 1967-12 and 1983.) Pakistan now consisted of these
divisions:
